THE PHILOSOPHY OF SANT-MAT
Sant-Mat ('Science of Spirituality') is the path to perfect liberation of the soul. It is the worship of the Supreme Divine Power, Positive Power, Pure Spirit, the like of which there isn't another (and none other; the object of worship or Ishta- deity should in any case be single)- known as Anami, Hari Rai in pristine, unexpressed form, Oversoul (of which the souls are but essence) and Sat Purush, Ekankar, Ram Rai in the expressed, within the human body-temple with the grace of a living perfect Master, who Himself is one with such Divinity and can connect us with it as well. It is revealed to humanity only during specific windows of time (else this world would empty itself out and the game of creation would be over!).
In Sant-Mat, the true Dharma- duty in life is self-realization and the reunification of the soul with the Oversoul- any act that brings the twain closer is considered 'good' or 'righteous' and any act that takes them apart alone is considered 'evil' or 'sin'. An initiate into Sant-Mat does not long for the Swargas- Heavens of the Triple Worlds, nor do its Narakas- Hells create any fear in his/her heart, for he/she is already potentially beyond all such dualities.
In outer living, the following are meant to be observed:
- Sadachar- ethical living i.e. inculcation of forgiveness, non-violence, mercy, sweet speech, charity, purity, non-avarice etc. is considered sine qua non- an 'essential stepping-stone' (although not a sufficient step) to Spirituality. It is believed that it is very difficult to become a good human being first, but if one becomes good, it is easy to find God! It is the overcoming of the lowermost aspects of the Mind- Pindi-man the Subconscious Mind or Sant-MatChitta- the Unconscious Mind (Nafs to the Sufis)- that is key. Shortcomings in ethical life are to be kept in check through maintenance of a daily 'Introspection Diary', in which each ethical failing is marked negatively.
- Satsang is the spiritual congregation of the Master, where regular presence is enjoined, so that one can learn the theoretical aspects of Spirituality, but even more importantly, receive direct spiritual radiation from the Master's eyes, which is the key essence.
- (Nishkaam) Sewa- selfless-service can be either spiritual (daily meditation for 2½ hrs., i.e. 10% of 24 hours), mental, physical or monetary. Giving away 10% of the earnings ('tithe') is the ground rule. Sant-Satgurus- the Sant-Mat Masters themselves earn their daily bread by the sweat of their brow.
- Samarpan- surrender to the Divine Will, knowing one's own will to be insubstantial. The Lord, working through the Master knows what is best for us and in leaving our own destiny in His hands, our soul begins to acquire the Divine qualities of the Oversoul: Unlimited Wisdom, Immortality, Unconditional Love, Fearlessness, Connectedness and Bliss. There are several paths within Sant-Mat. The path of Kathni- speech is for those who only speak of God, but do little to realize Him. The path of Karni- deeds is for those who regularly meditate and live an ethical life. But the shortest path of all is that of Rehni- surrender, the Path of Love for the Supreme Lord in the form of the Master and for all His Creation.
